STEVEN “SO COLD” NELSON “IM GONNA WHOOP HIM AND MAKE IT LOOK SEXY”
By Bill Green
This Saturday evening before the expected sold out crowd at the historical Madison Square Garden gather for the main event between P4P great Terence “Bud” Crawford 30-0 (21) and Former Olympic champ Felix Diaz 19-1 (9) square off, a very meaningful 6 rd. Light-Heavyweight bout will open the show.
The word show is most of the time used incorrectly among us sports fanatics, but not when you are mentioning former Omaha native and undefeated power punching Steven “So” Cold Nelson 6-0 (5). He is a pure entertainer and showmen, from the outfits (his Signature What will he where though trademark), to the one liners (I’m going to tuck him to bed and put him to sleep) to the YouTube knockouts and highlight reels inside the ring. It is only fitting to have the showman open the show and Nelson aims to do just that as he faces fellow power puncher Gilberto Rubio 7-5 (3) of Los Mochis, Sinola, Mexico. Nelson vs Rubio can be viewed live in its entirety via www.toprank.tv 6:35pm ET or in person at the famed Madison Square Garden located in midtown Manhattan, New York.
Moments after a stay sharp and run with best friend Crawford, I reached out to the multi-talented upcoming star and gathered his thoughts regarding this weekend’s mega event.
BG: Hello champ, how was training camp? Was the majority done in San Diego or Colorado Springs?
Nelson: Camp was awesome. I was supposed to fight in Mexico in April and it fell through, so I basically stayed in the gym for 2 months. I trained exclusively in SD, then 1-2 weeks in Colorado with bud, then 1-2 weeks in Omaha, then finishing up here in New York.
BG: Most folks that always ask me to help them get started with boxing or find me a fight say “Ya, I weigh 145, so find me someone at 145-147.” Can you describe the process of weight and nutrition for the fans? Watching you walking around 205-210 and making 175 is remarkable.
Nelson: Of course, ya I study a lot and lean on advice from my nutritionist. You never want to lose a fight on the scale, nor do you want to give an advantage to your opponent. I look at my size, reach and body structure, then I study my weight division. If I was at heavyweight, those guys are 6’5 or 6’6. Look at Klitschko and Joshua lol. Now don’t get me wrong, I would use my skill against those big guys, try to outbox them, but is it a disadvantage for me? Hell, yes. They have reach, size, strength and in most cases weight too.
BG: So, how do you do it? My buddy, just texted me and said ask Nelson what’s his secret?
Nelson: No secret, no cheating all natural. For me, I must be consistent with my workouts and diet or it’s a simple no go. I run, eat the right foods before camp and during camp. Next thing you know, I’m at 185, once I get there its 10lbs to go, it’s very difficult but necessary. The last 7-8 days, decrease the portions, and drink plenty of water. I compare the body to a car. How does a car run when you mix bad fuel and water? The body is the same it wants premium fuel to run at its peak performance. On Saturday night, that’s exactly the results you all are going to see, a premium car beating a sluggish car lol
BG: I just finished watching Camp Life, a project that was merely an idea and now a reality thanks to Team Crawford, Make Believe Media and numerous individuals that work behind the scenes. Do you think this series will finally help fight fans understand that ya the big lights, fame and money all seem like the perfect life, but the dedication and sacrifice is endless to achieve all those goals?
Nelson: Most of us been doing this since and early age or half our lives. Even when we get to the bright light venues like Vegas or NY, it’s not like we are there on vacation. It’s still the same, working out, eating right, sleeping and repeat. It’s just another place we been to. Bud, has 5 kids and tons of responsibility, me I’m involved in several business ventures and now enrolled full-time in College as well. Camp life should and hopefully will go down as one of the most realist and honest looks inside of a fighter’s life. This isn’t a script, it’s the real thing. Nobody is writing what to say, we are simply being recorded and told to carry on as usual lol
BG: Let’s get back to the task at hand. Rubio on paper looks like another walkthrough for you but you know me, I dig deeper into a fighter’s record. The guy can fight. A couple of his losses are against quality opposition. Decision losses to Panamanian ko artist Israel Duffus 15-4 (12) and two controversial decisions to Ryan Bourland 12-1 (5) are enough to take this guy serious, don’t you think?
Nelson: BG, you know me as well. Do you think I underestimate anybody? My philosophy, since day one has been the same. I train just like Terence, side by side. We train as if every fight is a title fight a major event. We know that anything can happen in this sport, we also know that everyone wants to eat. Meaning this guy is fighting for a purpose, he’s probably been told “if you pull off this upset, there’s bigger money for your next fight”. Everybody is dangerous, so they are respected in that way. Rubio can fight, most of those fights were against Top Rank guys in California too. However, I believe in my skills and the work has been done. Earlier this week, you asked me if I was ready to graduate. I’m going to ace the test and get extra credit!!!
BG: Final question, and I will let you get back to trying to beat Bud in pool or something lol. You have made a statement in Houston, Las Vegas and Omaha. A matter of fact when I googled you, the Vegas knockout appears in the search. What statement do you want to make this Saturday night live inside Madison Square Garden in New York of all places, televised live on Top Rank TV www.toprank.tv?
Nelson: I will continue to build the So Cold Nation, build my legion, enlist more troops so to speak. The way to do that is wow them and electrify them each opportunity I receive. I’m blessed to be a part of Team Crawford and Top Rank. My team is top notch. As for the statement, everybody needs to tune in because I’m going to show out. “I’m going to whoop him and make it look sexy”
